More shots of the cage!
Couldn’t be happier with the work performed by Jay at JPC! Welds were baller and spot on, and just solid work all around. Great communication from the very start and the work was completed to the very day he promised. That is super rare in the industry as work can get derailed by other projects and emergencies. Time and quality is hard to come by together so cheers to Jay! The goal was to have the safety and look of an IMSA car with X bars for the doors and the “taco shell” and having it just blend into the A and B pillars. More rigid will help this car handle awesome. I wish I could just clear coat this and send it!
Next stop is to Bobby of CNC Auto Body for some badass interior paint to prevent rust and keep everything clean. Not going for a show car but having a well sorted interior makes it more fun to drive!
Tough decision but we decided to go 4x100 VS the OEM 4x114.3 it came with to keep things simple. Before anything the rear trailing arm bushings were swapped with fresh PCI goodness 🙌🙌. Things are moving along nicely🙏🙏

Some shots of the build progress!
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••Brian did some digging for top cage builders in the northeast and after some solid recommendations and discussions, and a visit to the shop, decided to go with @jpcfabrication - Jay had some cool projects at his shop and the work and welds on his other builds were just amazing. Visibility was a concern coming from a year racing with a bolt in cage. Wanted safe, more room, and more rigidity. Never seen bars welded so close to the A Pillar! Some great visibility and the cage will feel like it disappears into the car. Baller fab work 🙏🙌Just awesome 🤙

Here’s some footage I found when the R landed 🙌🙌

Best of both worlds 🙌 - Using the 98+ spec Type R with 4.7 FD on the 97 body. It’s more preference - I prefer the shorter old school rear bumper 🙏
With everything on the ‘wrong side’ we will be installing some RyWire goodies like their tucked harness was and coil on plug kit, as well as some other special wiring to keep everything protected and me on track. Brian (FinalDrive) suggested a clean tucked harness on the orange teg build and it was the best decision for track purposes. Having wires out of the way and protected it’s just the last thing you want to worry about and you can easily spot leaks and clean the bay. No wires was a plus all around so we are doing it again!
Cage prep 🙌 - @finaldriveracing Brian is taking the lead on this build coordinating the delicate windshield removal and prep for cage to start off. Windshield weighed nothing to my surprise and there were noticeable differences with the Type R vs my US GSR like rear windshield wiper delete and super light trunk (wondering if the glass for the trunk is also thinner than US models non TypeR). Things I don’t know. Small things like the trunk guide (not pictured) and stitch welds, and the real LCAs being sooo different than non Type R. Also very cool is the dashboard has no airbag! We need to cut the dash which is gonna hurt a bit, but that’s RACECARLIFE😬! The goal is to catch the NASA SE Road Atlanta race in early December so the clock is ticking...🕐👀
So what’s the goal here... thought about time attack and having a nice build, but after the first year wheel to wheel racing in the Honda Challenge series and having so much fun, racing is the goal. NASA TX is where this is headed to help build the Honda Challenge class there, keeping the orange teg up north to compete in H4 with NASANE🤙. Gridlife would be cool if the car can be set up to be competitive, and might try out an event if the car is worthy🙇🏻♂️. SCCA STL also another option for more racing seat time (have to see about that restrictor plate rule!) - The main goal is to inspire people who want to get into the sport and Honda Challenge and I’m here to help show anyone the ropes. If even 1 person is inspired to race it will all be worth it. In the words of @ej2_track_rat “LETS GOOOOOO!” Also....HONDA CHALLENGE!!!!!
Time to tag the world 😩...
New build who dis👀
I was inspired by someone I met at NASA Nats at COTA 2 years ago who won H2 class in a RHD Type R and I wanted one ever since. Finally found one and will be building it for NASA TX to grow the HC class down there. Currently there is no class. Hopefully it will inspire more people to want to learn more about the sport and race in Honda Challenge! Happy to say I decided to keep the orange teg I’ve owned since 1999 and after my first year of racing I’ll be transitioning to H4 to race with NASA NE and the HC gang :) “slow it down” - Lots of excitement to come and so grateful to have tremendous support during my short time in the sport. So many people to thank so I need to make a separate post just for a giant THANK YOU to everyone. Let’s see where this goes :)
